Let’s Party!: Easy DIY Thanksgiving Decor

The holidays are in full swing, and as much as I’m already in Christmas mode (it’s hard not to be with the onslaught of ads and store displays), Thanksgiving comes first. And I LOVE Thanksgiving. I crave turkey, mashed potatoes, pumpkin pie, and sitting , completely over-stuffed, on the couch with my dad watching football. I love the tradition. I love the simplicity of good food and good company. In that spirit, here are some simple tablescapes and décor ideas if you happen to be the lucky hostess this year.

Grab some leaves from the backyard, hit them with gold spray paint, and use a Sharpie to write your guests’ names for super easy, but super glam, place cards.

Get a roll of craft paper at the dollar store, cut sheets to use as placemats, and make a list for everyone to share what they’re thankful this year.

Get a roll of fall-colored ribbon in the dollar bin at Michael’s, and do a simple knot to pretty up your silverware.

Mix and match your tableware, maybe even grab some fall-toned pieces from thrift shops, layer them up, and add a tiny gourd on top.

Use gold leaf or any spray paint to pretty up some small gourds. Just use painters tape to tape off the area you want to spray.

Pull together all of your big vases and jars, put cheap white candles (use unscented – you don’t want the scents to compete with the glorious smells of your food), and surround them with nuts or grains.

If you are the hostess this year, don’t stress! Your loved ones do not care if your house isn’t perfectly spotless. They’re there for the quality time with family and the food! I’ll have my favorite Thanksgiving recipes for you over the next couple weeks. I promise they are easy and fail-safe. And so so DELISH.

Have a great weekend!

DIY Inspiration: Agate Art

I know I’m a bit late to the party on this one, but I am loving agate right now. I’m seeing it everywhere! Target is even on the agate train, offering this end table and pillow as part of their Threshold line.

I’ve also been seeing some examples of agate wall art popping up, which I am OBSESSED with.

Soooo I scoured Etsy and Ebay and found a set of 5 gorgeous agate slices for $22 on Ebay.

They should be shipping today. They’re going to get framed and hung above the sofa in the family room. That room is almost complete and ready for sharing. Hopefully Monday!

Let’s Party: DIY Halloween Costumes

I know it’s over a month away, but if you’re like me, you’re already planning out your Halloween costume. Battling the crowds at costume stores is my nightmare, so I always get a jump start on things early, especially since my costumes normally require some DIY magic.

Two years ago, I was Hamburglar. Please take this photo as a lesson in the importance of posing for pictures. Facing the camera straight on with arms down and hunched shoulders is not a good look.

As for the costume though, it’s a cheap black and white striped dress from Forever 21, a kid’s length black cape, red sash belt tied as a tie, hamburgers I made out of craft foam sheets, black hat, red belt, and black boots. I loved it.

Last year, I was a unicorn:

UnicornWhite dress, purple tights, pink shoes, cut up sweater sleeves from a thrift store sweater for the leg warmers, cut up pink gloves, glitter garland tail, rainbow wig, and a skinny pink party hat. This is probably my favorite costume of all-time. So fun!

This year, I’ve been heading down a bird-themed path. Flamingo, parrot, and raven are all options.

I’m leaning towards a raven right now. I’ll post pictures once I have it figured out. We’re having a “Haunted Housewarming Party” on the 26th, so I’ll be sharing all the party details soon too!

Have a great weekend!

Thrifting Scores: Bentwood Chairs

Guys. I had a huge score last night at Salvation Army. I popped in after work to check out their furniture and found these lovelies.

Cane chair (1)

And get this. $6.99 each. So my first thought was this would be a perfect chair for the corner of my mom’s guest room. Space is at a premium in there, so the slim profile of the chair would be a perfect fit. Just enough room to take a seat while putting on your shoes, or a nice spot to prop up your overnight bag. We’re going with black and white throughout the room, with touches of emerald green. Wouldn’t this chair be gorgeous painted in a rich, deep green? Maybe with a black glaze overtop.

So there were 6 of these pups sitting there. And I think to myself, self, these chairs would also be perfect in my living room around the little bistro table I plan to put in front of the windows. I could stain them darker or paint them navy. Perfect place for coffee, crosswords, etc. And at $6.99? OK, I’ll take 4 more of them.

And what if I accidentally break one? Or if there’s another empty corner calling out for a cute chair? OK I’ll take the last one too.

BUT WAIT! I get up to the register, and he rings me up and says, “All wood furniture is 33% off tonight, so these chairs will be $4.68 each.” SHUT THE FRONT DOOR.

Ben is going to kill me for bringing more chairs into the house. Between chairs and pillows, we could provide sitting areas for a small army. Whatever. 6 chairs for less than 30 bucks. That’s a win, people.
